Irving doesn't have to go to jail for someone else's sins. Since he is the one facing the time, it is up to him to chose his course of action. It's not like he is snitching someone off to stay out of prison.

You are correct! If I were 67 years old and facing jail time for telling the truth, I'd recant mighty quick to reduce the length of my sentence. Jail, white or not, is not a tea party. Unfortunately, he may have recanted - but they got him anyway; 3 years is a long time when you are old. He had no way of knowing this would happen.
